PU plants Miyawaki trees on 2 acres

LAHORE: (Monday, May 11, 2026): On the directions of Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Muhammad Ali, a Miyawaki forest has been established on two acres of land at the New Campus. In this regard, a ceremony was held at the ground adjacent to the PU Health Center, where the tree plantation campaign was launched by planting Miyawaki saplings over two acres of land here on Monday. On this occasion, Director General Student Affairs, Estate & Security Prof Dr. Rehan Sadiq Shaikh, Resident Officer-II Prof Dr. Majid Khan, Chief Conservator of the Forest Department Sheikh Saqib, faculty members from various departments, forest department officials, and students were present. Addressing the ceremony, PU VC Prof Dr. Muhammad Ali said that ten thousand Miyawaki trees have been planted as part of the new plantation campaign. He said that PU is playing an important role in improving the environment. He further stated that the land where the Miyawaki forest is being developed had been under illegal occupation for the past 50 years. He said that PU reclaimed the land and transformed it into a Miyawaki forest as a gift to the city of Lahore. He said that due to the lush green and pleasant environment of PU, hundreds of species of birds arrive PU during migration. He also remarked that planting trees is a Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ and a virtuous deed. Sheikh Saqib said that Miyawaki plantations are a new form of urban forestation. He stated that Miyawaki trees are among the most effective means to combat climate change. He added that Miyawaki trees have a greater capacity to absorb carbon and produce more oxygen. He further said that planting a Miyawaki forest in the center of the city is a highly significant initiative by PU. Prof Dr. Majid Khan said that ten thousand Miyawaki trees have been planted at the New Campus of PU.
