Remote Sensing, GIS and Climatic Research Lab (RSGCRL)

Pakistan is amongst the most vulnerable countries facing Climate Change risks with very low technical, financial and professional capacity to adapt, mitigate and prevent its adverse impact. Climate Change aggravates the social inequalities, and intensifies social factors leading to displacement, conflicts, instability, and changes in migration patterns. Low budgets and lacking in technical support, and human and professional capacity are also big issues for planning sustainable solutions not only in Pakistan but also for other developing countries of the world.
It is believed that space borne data with proper GIS analyses can provide low cost and easy to adopt alternatives to adapt, mitigate and prevent Climate Change to support efficient decision-making systems of the developing world. It is also believed that development of GIS and Space Applications in this domain is not only something that can be shared with international organizations but it can also help in improving living standards of Pakistan through sustainable solutions for healthy environment, better urban planning, saving of natural resources, etc. In this regard, the availability of such a lab with latest equipment and competent team of experts and analysts can be of great advantage to adapt, mitigate and prevent climate change problem. The RSGCRL aims to promote and facilitate education, research activities and collaborations to study and develop GIS and Space Applications with particular emphasis on sustainable development in Pakistan, and cost-effective tools for developing world.
RSGCRL links with Space Vision 2025, Vision 2047 and UN-SDGs
The emerging demand of GIS and Space Applications for Climate Change studies for the socio-economic development of Pakistan along with Government of Pakistan Vision 2025, Space Vision 2047 of National Space Agency of Pakistan, and achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) impelled the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) to establish Remote Sensing, GIS and Climatic Research Lab (RSGCRL) at University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. RSGCRL is linked to several SDGs such as SDG 1 No Poverty, SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 7 Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 10 Reduced Inequality, SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 Climate Action, SDG 14 Life Below Water, SDG 15 Life on Land, and SDG 17 Partnerships to achieve the Goal.
Application domains of the Lab
The research and development activities at RSGCRL are mainly focused on following major areas and serious challenges faced by Pakistan by using latest tools, technologies, and scientific approaches related to GIS and Space Applications:
1.
To monitor atmospheric reactive and green-house gases, their transport, and assess their impact on climate change.
2.
Urban planning with particular emphasis on solid waste management, gases emissions and their impact on ecology, and environmental bio-thermal hazards.
3.
To assess the Landuse/Landcover (LULC) changes, water crises, and their impact on climate change.
4.
To monitor natural and anthropogenic aerosols, track transboundary aerosols, and assess their radiative impact on climate change.
